EU member states recorded different price levels for consumer goods and service in 2010. The highest price level has been reported by Denmark at 143% of the EU27 average followed by Finland with 123%.
While, Malta's price levels were at 79% of the EU27 average due to prices in hotels and restaurants (77%), whereas the prices of food and beverages are at 93% of the EU27 average.
Prices of personal transport equipment in Malta are highest in Europe at 110% of the EU average but less than Denmark with 167%, Portugal with 120% and Ireland with 116%.
Consumer electronics prices in Malta are at 110% of the EU average but again less than Sweden with 115% and Denmark with 113%.
Categories like alcoholic beverages and tobacco have lower price levels below the EU average like 91% and 88% of the EU27 average respectively.
Talking about furniture and furnishings and household appliances, Malta bagged the highest position in price levels among all 37 countries. Experts believed that reason behind higher price level is its geographical position which leads to higher transportation costs and the small size of its internal market.
