Liverpool FC said on Monday it has signed Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a deal worth 125 million pounds, setting a new British transfer record.

The Premier League confirmed the transaction, describing it as the most expensive transfer in the league’s history and the defining move of a summer window that itself set spending records across the competition.

In its own statement, Liverpool said Isak has agreed to a long-term contract and will wear the No. 9 shirt. The club said the 25-year-old forward brings proven Premier League experience and will reinforce its attacking options ahead of the new campaign.

The deal forms part of an unprecedented summer outlay by Liverpool, which spent 415 million pounds on new players – the largest single-window investment in European football history. The previous record was 400 million pounds, set by Chelsea in the summer of 2023.

The transfer underscores both Liverpool’s ambition and the escalating costs reshaping the Premier League. For the league, it represents another step in a long-term trend of rising valuations, which now dominate the global football economy.
