Norway’s seafood exports declined in August, marking a rare setback for one of the country’s most important industries, according to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council.

The total export value reached NOK 14.2 billion, down NOK 1.1 billion compared with the same month last year. The council said weaker demand in key European markets and lower prices for salmon were the main reasons behind the decline.

“After several months of strong growth, August brought a correction,” said Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council. He noted that a combination of currency fluctuations, inflation-driven changes in consumer spending, and increased competition in the EU market have put pressure on exporters.

Despite the downturn, volumes remained relatively stable, underlining that Norwegian seafood still holds strong market positions globally. However, the industry faces challenges in maintaining margins as consumer demand softens and logistics costs remain elevated.

The council emphasized that seafood continues to be one of Norway’s top export sectors after oil and gas, but that the August figures highlight the sector’s sensitivity to global economic conditions.
