The Swedish government has unveiled a “food price package” aimed at lowering the cost of everyday groceries, in response to persistent inflationary pressures and rising household expenses.

According to the government, the measures will reduce prices on basic food items by introducing targeted VAT reductions, strengthening competition in the retail sector, and expanding subsidies for domestic food production. The package also includes investments to improve logistics chains and support smaller food retailers, particularly in rural areas where consumers face higher costs.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the initiative is designed to ensure that Swedish households can better cope with the cost of living. “Everyone should be able to afford a full shopping bag,” he noted, adding that food affordability is now a political priority.

The food price package forms part of a broader set of government measures to tackle inflation and strengthen consumer purchasing power, alongside ongoing efforts to reduce energy costs and bolster social welfare support.
