Danish renewables giant Ørsted is taking legal action to safeguard one of its most important U.S. projects, after a stop-work order threatened to derail the 704 MW Revolution Wind development off the coasts of Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Revolution Wind, a joint venture between Ørsted and Eversource, said it will file for a preliminary injunction, arguing the order is unlawful and puts at risk a project designed to power more than 350,000 homes with clean energy. The company stressed that any delay could undermine billions in planned investment and thousands of local jobs tied to the build-out.

For Ørsted, Revolution Wind is a flagship in its North American strategy and a signal of its global leadership in offshore wind. The Danish group has made the U.S. a cornerstone of its growth plan, and the dispute highlights the mounting regulatory hurdles facing the offshore wind industry at a time when governments are calling for rapid expansion of renewables.

The outcome of the case will be closely watched across the sector, as it could set a precedent for how quickly — or slowly — large-scale clean energy projects can advance in the U.S. market.
