Denmark has launched its largest arms purchase ever, committing 58 billion kroner to two new European air defence systems – one long-range and one medium-range. The landmark deal, anchored by the SAMP/T system, comes with binding industrial cooperation requirements that will channel multi-billion-kroner contracts back into the Danish defence industry.
According to Dansk Industri (DI), the procurement is both a major security milestone and a transformative industrial opportunity. “This is the largest investment ever, and it strengthens our security while rebuilding capabilities Denmark has not had for decades,” said Joachim Finkielman, Deputy Director and Head of DI Defence and Security.
The agreement ensures that Danish companies will play a central role in sensors, missile technology, integration and maintenance. The first system is expected to be operational later this year, with additional deliveries scheduled through 2028 and 2029.
DI stresses that the partnership will drive technology transfer, deepen ties between Danish firms and the Armed Forces, and position local companies within Europe’s defence supply chains. This, in turn, creates export opportunities, new production in Denmark and stronger supply security in times of crisis.
For Europe, the move signals a strategic tilt toward European-built defence systems. For Denmark, it secures not only advanced air defence but also a once-in-a-generation boost for its domestic defence industry.
